In the immortal words of Aretha Franklin...RESPECT...find out what it means to me! Whether you are a pet parent or not, it's very important to remember that animals, as sentient beings, have their own minds, their own wills, their own pathways. We need to have respect for these aspects of their being. What do I mean by that? Here are some examples. An acquaintance has had several pets pass away during the time we've known each other. Each time, she struggles with letting them go in their own time, and doesn't believe in euthanasia. Now this is a difficult time for anyone, I understand that. However, force-feeding water or liquified food when an animal is close to death can cause more damage than good. She has difficulty respecting the pet's choice to leave, even when it's obviously the right time, and comfort care by a non-professional can cross the line. Although I believe the practice may now be outlawed, many times entertainment venues have animals available for viewing or photo opportunities. Not only has the animal been taken from its natural home with family, it is forced to "perform" at the will of humans. Such "entertainment" as elephant rides, photos with lion cubs, or restrictive zoos not only cause great harm, but completely disrespect the living being. Even such mundane activities as lawn and garden care can be disrespectful of Mother Nature herself. We can enjoy nature yet cause no harm with chemicals, landscaping with non-native species, and animal traps. Understand that I am not speaking of venues whose primary goals are education and care for the animals which have their charges' wellbeing at the core. I am also not speaking of healthy, respectful training and discipline, which also focus on respect. My belief is that a life which co-operates with nature in all her many aspects is one that respects this earth we share in.
